Horror desk
This collection serves as a vital resource for scholars and serious enthusiasts of gothic literature who wish to explore Poe’s theoretical contributions alongside his famous fictions. However, it may not appeal to casual readers seeking straightforward, unadulterated horror without poetic or critical depth. The inclusion of scientific theory and extensive book reviews demands patience and an appreciation for literary criticism that might overwhelm those looking only for atmospheric tales of madness. While the blend of artistic creation and critical analysis is historically significant, the density of non-fiction material could alienate readers expecting a purely narrative experience. It is best approached as a study of Poe’s method rather than a simple anthology of scary stories.

Very good

Ordered it for Halloween and it came in time. The dread is in the pacing, not in gore, which is exactly how I like it. It assumes some familiarity with the genre's tropes.

Not for the squeamish

Bought this for my brother and ended up reading it first. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. The atmosphere builds slowly and then does not let go. Delivery took a bit longer than quoted. Solid, if not essential.

Exactly as described

Grabbed it for a long flight. It is the kind of horror that rewards reading with the lights on. The atmosphere builds slowly and then does not let go.

Kept me up

Needed a good scare and got one. Not a jump-scare book; it gets under the skin and stays there. The prose is clean and the scares land because the characters feel real.

Not my usual subgenre but wanted to branch out. The atmosphere builds slowly and then does not let go. The font runs small in this edition. Solid, if not essential.

Chilling

A friend from my book club recommended it. Read it in two sittings; the second one ran past midnight. The setting is practically a character, and a hostile one. Shipping was quick too.
