Not my usual subgenre but wanted to branch out. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. Slow burn, but the burn is the point.
Ordered it for Halloween and it came in time. The monster is scarier for how little you see of it. Not a jump-scare book; it gets under the skin and stays there. Five stars from me.
This has been on my wishlist for months. The ending is bleak and honest, not a twist for the sake of one. Read it in two sittings; the second one ran past midnight. Belongs in any working kitchen.
Been meaning to get this one for a while. There's real craft in how much is left unsaid. Still worth having on the shelf.
Needed a good scare and got one. Read it in two sittings; the second one ran past midnight. The setting is practically a character, and a hostile one. It assumes some familiarity with the genre's tropes. Still worth having on the shelf.
I read a lot of horror and I'm picky. The atmosphere builds slowly and then does not let go. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. Belongs in any working kitchen.
❓ Frequently asked questions
📖 Who should read this
Ideal for connoisseurs of atmospheric dread and gothic mystery who appreciate psychological unease over visceral gore. Readers craving high-octane action, modern pacing, or expansive novel-length narratives will likely find these early twentieth-century vignettes too slow and static for their tastes.
