A collection of chilling tales by Shirley Jackson exploring rural rituals and social cruelty.
This anthology gathers stories that dissect the fragility of social order. Jackson uses the framework of village ceremonies and wedding rites to expose the underlying violence in human interaction. The narratives do not rely on monsters but on the terrifying reality of neighbors turning against one another. The pacing is deliberate, building tension through the accumulation of small, wrong decisions made by characters who believe they are acting correctly. The result is a reading experience that lingers long after the final page, leaving the reader with a sense of unease about the structures that govern daily life.
The stories reflect mid-twentieth century American anxieties about community conformity. Published by Penguin Group in 2010, this edition brings Jackson’s classic exploration of manners and customs to a modern audience interested in the roots of horror fiction.

Finally got around to ordering this. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly. The dread is in the pacing, not in gore, which is exactly how I like it. The font runs small in this edition. Recommended with reservations.
Grabbed it for a long flight. The setting is practically a character, and a hostile one. Well worth it.
I read a lot of horror and I'm picky. It is the kind of horror that rewards reading with the lights on. The cover feels thinner than expected. Happy enough with the purchase.
I read a lot of horror and I'm picky. The binding held up to being carried around for a week. Print is comfortable for late-night reading. My only regret is not ordering it sooner.
