This collection demonstrates Shirley Jackson’s unparalleled mastery of atmospheric dread, proving that true horror often resides in the ordinary. The stories are tightly crafted, utilizing domestic spaces and community rituals to expose the fragility of social norms. While the prose is precise and the emotional impact potent, this book is strictly for readers willing to engage with dark undertones and shifting tones. It will likely alienate those seeking straightforward genre thrills or lighthearted narratives. The lack of supernatural reliance requires a focus on psychological nuance that some may find demanding. However, for fans of literary horror, the unsettling exploration of human nature makes this a compelling and necessary addition to any serious collection of short fiction.

Good addition to the shelf

First order from this shop. The prose is clean and the scares land because the characters feel real. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly. Delivery took a bit longer than quoted. Good, with the caveats above.

Genuinely scary

Not my usual subgenre but wanted to branch out. Read it in two sittings; the second one ran past midnight. Slow burn, but the burn is the point. Well worth it.

Worth every penny

Finally got around to ordering this. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. The monster is scarier for how little you see of it. Five stars from me.
