Needed a good scare and got one. The dread is in the pacing, not in gore, which is exactly how I like it. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. The cover feels thinner than expected. Happy enough with the purchase.
Grabbed it for a long flight. Slow burn, but the burn is the point. Good, with the caveats above.
A friend from my book club recommended it. The atmosphere builds slowly and then does not let go. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly. If you like this kind of cooking, don't hesitate.
