The Incredible Shrinking Man
✍️ Richard MathesonA man shrinks indefinitely while his world grows perilously large.
Scott Carey faces an unexplained physical reduction that isolates him from his family and home. His domestic environment shifts from sanctuary to threat as everyday objects become obstacles and animals become hunters. Matheson writes this early novel with precision, focusing on the psychological toll of losing control over one’s body. The story does not rely on external monsters but rather on the terror of mundane surroundings turning deadly. It is a study in resilience and the erosion of identity.
This 2001 Tor Books edition presents Matheson's early novel, which inspired the 1957 Hugo Award-winning science fiction film. Bought this for my brother and ended up reading it first. There's real craft in how much is left unsaid.
Bought this for my brother and ended up reading it first. The binding held up to being carried around for a week. Read it in two sittings; the second one ran past midnight. My only quibble is that the middle third sags a little. Still worth having on the shelf.
Got it as a gift for a friend who loves the genre. There's real craft in how much is left unsaid. Good, with the caveats above.
Not my usual subgenre but wanted to branch out. The binding held up to being carried around for a week.
First order from this shop. Read it in two sittings; the second one ran past midnight. There's real craft in how much is left unsaid. Highly recommend.
Been meaning to get this one for a while. The ending is bleak and honest, not a twist for the sake of one. Five stars from me.
Took a chance on it after reading the description here. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. The monster is scarier for how little you see of it. Great value for what you get.
