The Country Beneath

In Saint Paul Park, everybody lives downwind of something. In 1983, a ruined gas-station clerk becomes the easiest suspect when a young woman disappears near a Minnesota refinery. Ten years later, an Iowa emergency dispatcher receives calls from houses already underwater. During a Lake Superior blizzard, a snowplow driver finds a motel demolished decades earlier - and a room kept warm by stolen voices. Each survivor believes the horror belongs to one place, one storm, or one guilty man. They are wrong. When three analog recordings are digitized in 2026, the voices find an audience large enough to escape. The survivors must return to the buried passage where the pattern began and decide whether proof of the dead is worth giving the darkness a language of its own. The Country Beneath collects four linked works of literary Midwestern horror about blame, grief, industrial landscapes, and the terrible things communities agree not to see.
