Mailloux crafts a tense narrative that explores the fragility of identity when faced with supernatural coercion. The transition from mundane retail drudgery to violent self-defense creates a stark, unsettling contrast that drives the plot forward effectively. By framing Clyde as an innocent man forced into the role of a butcher, the author invites readers to question justice and perception in a corrupt system. The setting of Casper serves as a pressure cooker for societal fear, making the horror feel immediate and grounded. This book suits fans of psychological thrillers mixed with dark fantasy elements who appreciate morally ambiguous characters navigating impossible choices.
