A multigenerational horror tale linking a 1900s Mexican witch to a 1930s university mystery.
This novel operates as a layered investigation where academic research intersects with ancestral trauma. Minerva’s thesis on Beatrice Tremblay reveals that fiction can mask terrifying reality. The connection between the missing roommate and Nana Alba’s witch encounter suggests a persistent supernatural threat. The narrative structure moves through time to show how past events echo in the present. It emphasizes the danger of uncovering secrets rather than the horror itself. The setting shifts from Mexico to Massachusetts, highlighting cultural differences in dealing with the unknown.
The story spans 1900s Mexico and the Great Depression era, concluding in 1990s Massachusetts. It draws on Mexican Gothic traditions and American university culture to explore how women navigate patriarchal structures through supernatural means.

First order from this shop. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. There's real craft in how much is left unsaid. Great value for what you get.
Been meaning to get this one for a while. The setting is practically a character, and a hostile one. There's real craft in how much is left unsaid. Will be gifting a copy to a friend.
This has been on my wishlist for months. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. Well worth it.
Grabbed it for a long flight. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. It is the kind of horror that rewards reading with the lights on. My only regret is not ordering it sooner.
Finished it over a stormy weekend, which helped. Slow burn, but the burn is the point. Shipping was quick too.
This has been on my wishlist for months. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks. The atmosphere builds slowly and then does not let go. Already eyeing my next order.
Took a chance on it after reading the description here. The ending is bleak and honest, not a twist for the sake of one. Good, with the caveats above.
