Spook City
✍️ Clive BarkerA collection of dark Liverpool fictions by Barker, Campbell, and Atkins.
Spook City brings together three celebrated horror authors to explore the macabre side of Liverpool. Ramsey Campbell, Clive Barker, and Peter Atkins provide stories that reflect the city's hidden nightmares. Doug Bradley introduces the work, linking it to his iconic role as Pinhead. The anthology uses the concept of the pool of life to frame these terrifying narratives. It focuses on the Princes of Nightmare and their imaginings. The book does not rely on famous pop culture references but instead dives into the local supernatural tradition. It offers a glimpse into the grim up North atmosphere that defines Liverpool After Midnight.
The book draws on Carl Jung's description of Liverpool as the pool of life. It contrasts this with the city's fame for Beatles melodies and Paul O'Grady punchlines. The work highlights the darker dreams of the Merseyside imagination and the local tradition of horror fiction.

Got it as a gift for a friend who loves the genre. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. The audiobook crowd will want the paper copy for the margins. Highly recommend.
This has been on my wishlist for months. Slow burn, but the burn is the point. Good, with the caveats above.
First order from this shop. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. Delivery took a bit longer than quoted. Solid, if not essential.
Bought this for my brother and ended up reading it first. The ending is bleak and honest, not a twist for the sake of one. Gorier than the description lets on, if that matters to you. Happy enough with the purchase.
Needed a good scare and got one. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. Definitely recommend.
