A photographer in a coma confronts ancient forces through childhood memories.
Will Rabjohns lies in a coma after a polar bear attack, forcing him to relive a pivotal childhood memory. This memory involves meeting ancient, terrible forces that revealed the mystery at the heart of nature. Barker uses this premise to explore the intersection of art, trauma, and spiritual duty. The protagonist realizes that waking up means facing the darkness of his past. He must fight for the soul of every animal on Earth. The narrative does not offer easy answers or simple resolutions. Instead, it presents a complex view of nature’s beauty and its inherent violence. Readers will find a story that prioritizes psychological depth over conventional plot mechanics.
Published by Voyager in 1997, this revised edition sits within the tradition of gothic and supernatural fiction. Barker’s work often draws on horror elements to explore human psychology. The book reflects late twentieth-century interests in nature writing and spiritual crisis.

Finally got around to ordering this. There's real craft in how much is left unsaid. Print is comfortable for late-night reading.
A friend from my book club recommended it. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks. A couple of the side characters are thinly drawn. Solid, if not essential.
Got it as a gift for a friend who loves the genre. The ending is bleak and honest, not a twist for the sake of one. Not a jump-scare book; it gets under the skin and stays there. It assumes some familiarity with the genre's tropes. Happy enough with the purchase.
Got it as a gift for a friend who loves the genre. The binding held up to being carried around for a week. Well worth it.
Bought this for my brother and ended up reading it first. The ending is bleak and honest, not a twist for the sake of one. Will be gifting a copy to a friend.
Added this to the shelf next to the ones I reread. The monster is scarier for how little you see of it. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. Would buy from this store again.
Needed a good scare and got one. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. Gorier than the description lets on, if that matters to you. Still worth having on the shelf.
