❓ Frequently asked questions
Not at all. While 'I Am Legend' is a seminal work of zombie-esque science fiction, 'Other Kingdoms' is a grounded Gothic romance focused on psychological manipulation and witchcraft, offering a starkly different tonal experience.
The book features seductive themes and romantic entanglement central to the plot, but it is primarily a atmospheric horror novel. The focus remains on psychological tension and supernatural dread rather than graphic or gratuitous material.

📜 Historical context
Richard Matheson is often celebrated for his mid-century science fiction, yet his horror roots run deep into the Gothic tradition. This novel channels the eerie isolation of Shirley Jackson while echoing the magical realism of M.R. James. Set against the fragile recovery of post-WWI England, it explores how trauma and ancient folklore intertwine, marking a unique departure from his usual technological fears toward timeless supernatural seduction.
