My Hero
✍️ Stephen Graham JonesA forty-six page comic exploring the psychological cost of realized dreams through superhero tropes.
This volume examines the emotional aftermath of achieving one's deepest desires. Jones uses the visual language of comics to depict a character who must maintain their composure as their reality shifts. The narrative avoids traditional heroics in favor of introspection. It asks how long a person can sustain the illusion of control when faced with overwhelming success. The work is structured to mimic the flow of a dream, where logic is secondary to feeling. Readers will encounter a protagonist who uses physical gestures, such as clenching fists, to anchor themselves against the dissolving nature of their experience. The story does not provide answers but rather documents the struggle to remain present in a moment that feels too perfect to last.
Published in 2017 by Hex Publishers LLC, this work sits within the tradition of American comic books and strips. It engages with the superhero genre while drawing on French bandes dessinees influences. The text reflects contemporary interests in deconstructing popular myths through a horror-informed lens.

Bought this for my brother and ended up reading it first. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. Shipping was quick too.
Took a chance on it after reading the description here. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. One of my better finds this year.
Was skeptical at first. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. Glad I finally picked this up.
I read a lot of horror and I'm picky. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. Recommended with reservations.
Been meaning to get this one for a while. The atmosphere builds slowly and then does not let go.
Finished it over a stormy weekend, which helped. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. Five stars from me.

📖 Who should read this
Seekers of psychological horror who enjoy deconstructing genre tropes will love this intimate, atmospheric tale. However, if you crave sprawling epics, high-octane action sequences, or traditional caped crusaders with extensive world-building, this deliberate, internal focus may feel too slow and unsatisfying for your tastes.
