Middle Unearthed: The Best Fantasy Short Stories 1800-1849
✍️ Mary ShelleyA curated anthology of early nineteenth-century fantasy short stories by Mary Shelley.
This volume gathers twenty-three pages of introductory content and subsequent tales to illustrate the state of English fantasy fiction during the first fifty years of the 1800s. Mary Shelley acts as the compiler, selecting works that demonstrate the genre's roots before the rise of modern wizarding narratives or ogre characters. The text avoids contemporary shorthand, presenting these stories on their own terms. The collection includes material published between 1800 and 1849, offering a focused glimpse into a specific literary window. It does not attempt to cover every work from the era but rather highlights key examples that define the period's imaginative landscape. The arrangement allows readers to trace thematic continuities across decades of publication.
The book sits within the literary history of English language fantasy before the twentieth century. It covers the period from 1800 to 1849, a time when the genre was still forming its conventions. This era predates the popularization of modern fantasy tropes seen in later media.

Wanted something for October and it delivered. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. The audiobook crowd will want the paper copy for the margins. Shipping was quick too.
Finished it over a stormy weekend, which helped. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. A keeper.
Took a chance on it after reading the description here. Slow burn, but the burn is the point. The monster is scarier for how little you see of it. A couple of the side characters are thinly drawn. Happy enough with the purchase.
This has been on my wishlist for months. The binding held up to being carried around for a week. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. Would buy from this store again.
Wanted something for October and it delivered. The audiobook crowd will want the paper copy for the margins. Read it in two sittings; the second one ran past midnight.
Added this to the shelf next to the ones I reread. The monster is scarier for how little you see of it. Definitely recommend.
