Been meaning to get this one for a while. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly. Gorier than the description lets on, if that matters to you. Happy enough with the purchase.
Needed a good scare and got one. The setting is practically a character, and a hostile one. My only regret is not ordering it sooner.
I read a lot of horror and I'm picky. Print is comfortable for late-night reading. Great value for what you get.
Arrived quickly and well packaged. There's real craft in how much is left unsaid. The ending is bleak and honest, not a twist for the sake of one. Good, with the caveats above.
A friend from my book club recommended it. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. A couple of the side characters are thinly drawn. Happy enough with the purchase.
Not my usual subgenre but wanted to branch out. The atmosphere builds slowly and then does not let go. The prose is clean and the scares land because the characters feel real. Belongs in any working kitchen.
Was skeptical at first. The atmosphere builds slowly and then does not let go. The setting is practically a character, and a hostile one. Gorier than the description lets on, if that matters to you. Good, with the caveats above.
❓ Frequently asked questions
📖 Who should read this
Seekers of Gothic heritage and archival enthusiasts will cherish this clean, legible reprint of Shelley’s lesser-known gem. However, those craving the visceral shock of modern horror or the high-octane pacing of contemporary thrillers may find the deliberate, reflective prose too slow and undemanding for their tastes.
