📚 WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT

A dual biography of Marshal Clay Hauser and Wild Bill Hickok by Richard Matheson.

This volume merges two distinct narratives to examine the intersection of reality and legend in the Old West. One story focuses on Clay Hauser, whose military background and frontier actions created a public image that ultimately haunted him. The other chronicles James Butler Hickok, who became a national celebrity through his work as a marshal and gunfighter. Matheson’s approach highlights the psychological weight of fame and the isolation of men facing overwhelming odds. The text draws on historical traditions of western storytelling while presenting these figures as complex individuals rather than simple heroes.

📝 Description: Legends of the Gun Years: Two Gripping Volumes of the Wild West

Richard Matheson presents a dual narrative exploring the lives of two iconic figures from the American frontier. The first section, Journal of the Gun Years, follows Marshal Clay Hauser, a Civil War veteran celebrated as the Hero of the Plains. While his daring exploits in raucous cow towns earned him fame back East, the text suggests that this reputation becomes an inescapable curse leading to his violent end. This volume won the Spur Award for Best Western Novel. The second part, The Memoirs of Wild Bill Hickok, examines James Butler Hickok. As a gunfighter and U. S. marshal, he achieved celebrity status before the existence of Hollywood. Matheson is noted for depicting individuals locked in desperate struggles against forces greater than themselves, a quality highlighted by Stephen King. This collection combines these two epic stories into one volume. Readers interested in historical western fiction and biographical accounts of legendary gunfighters will find this compilation engaging. Those seeking purely fictional adventure without historical grounding may prefer other genres. The book offers a look at the men behind the myths, presenting their struggles against fame and destiny through Matheson’s distinctive lens.

Richard Matheson delivers a dual narrative that examines the psychological toll of frontier legend-making. By focusing on Marshal Clay Hauser and Wild Bill Hickok, the text highlights the isolation of men facing overwhelming odds rather than offering simple heroic tales. The tone is reflective and somewhat haunting, suitable for readers who enjoy deep character studies over action. However, those seeking fast-paced gunfights or traditional Western adventure may find the focus on internal struggle and historical grounding tedious. It is best suited for literary horror fans who appreciate Matheson’s ability to depict desperate struggles against forces greater than themselves.

Almost perfect

Bought this for my brother and ended up reading it first. The prose is clean and the scares land because the characters feel real. Print is comfortable for late-night reading. My only quibble is that the middle third sags a little. Still worth having on the shelf.

Worth the read

Finally got around to ordering this. The binding held up to being carried around for a week. The ending is bleak and honest, not a twist for the sake of one. Delivery took a bit longer than quoted. Good, with the caveats above.

Kept me up

Finally got around to ordering this. It is the kind of horror that rewards reading with the lights on. The atmosphere builds slowly and then does not let go. Glad I finally picked this up.

Ordered it for Halloween and it came in time. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way.

A modern classic

This has been on my wishlist for months. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks. Five stars from me.

Worth every penny

Was skeptical at first. The binding held up to being carried around for a week. My only regret is not ordering it sooner.

❓ Frequently asked questions

It blends historical events with Matheson’s characteristic psychological intensity and fatalistic tone. While grounded in real figures like Hickok, it treats their legends as inevitable curses rather than simple adventure tales.
The horror is metaphorical and psychological rather than ghostly. The 'supernatural' aspect lies in the inescapable nature of fame and fate, creating a sense of dread that permeates the Western setting.

📖 Who should read this

Fans of gritty, biographical Westerns and those who appreciate Matheson’s psychological depth will enjoy this. However, if you seek lighthearted, purely fictional action without historical weight or tragic undertones, this heavy exploration of fame’s curse may not suit your tastes.

📜 Historical context

Richard Matheson bridges the gap between factual biography and supernatural-tinged horror, a hallmark of his career. By examining real legends like Wild Bill Hickok and Marshal Clay Hauser, he infuses their historical narratives with his signature theme: individuals battling inescapable, overwhelming forces. This approach aligns with the Western genre’s fascination with myth-making, while Matheson adds a layer of existential dread typical of his broader horror legacy.
