Just Breathe: My Journey Through Cancer and Back
Stephen King's memoir details his four-year fight against aggressive cancer and his difficult physical recovery.
King uses journal entries to chronicle the medical interventions that saved his life but permanently changed his body. He describes the excruciating pain that prompted his initial doctor visit and the subsequent diagnosis of synovial sarcoma. The text explores how losing half a lung and part of a leg forced him to rebuild his identity. His perspective as a gay man adds a layer of complexity regarding body image in society. The recovery process involves relearning movement and accepting a new physical reality. Friends and family provide the emotional foundation necessary for survival. The narrative avoids medical jargon in favor of personal reflection on pain, fear, and eventual acceptance.
Published by iUniverse in 2006, this book emerges from King’s experience as a gay man in an image-driven society. It reflects the cultural pressure to maintain physical appearance while dealing with a rare, aggressive illness that required extensive medical intervention and long-term recovery.

This has been on my wishlist for months. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly. Delivery took a bit longer than quoted. Still worth having on the shelf.
Added this to the shelf next to the ones I reread. Read it in two sittings; the second one ran past midnight. The font runs small in this edition. Solid, if not essential.
Wanted something for October and it delivered. Slow burn, but the burn is the point. The ending is bleak and honest, not a twist for the sake of one. Gorier than the description lets on, if that matters to you.
Ordered it for Halloween and it came in time. Read it in two sittings; the second one ran past midnight. One of my better finds this year.
Been meaning to get this one for a while. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. A keeper.
Bought this for my brother and ended up reading it first. The setting is practically a character, and a hostile one. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. Would buy from this store again.
