📚 WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT

A collection of twenty-six short stories by Stephen King featuring mundane horrors.

This volume gathers twenty-six distinct narratives that utilize everyday American settings to generate fear. King employs the portable toilet, the stationary bicycle, and the roadside bar as focal points for supernatural intrusion. The book salesman and his silent passenger illustrate the tension of unspoken threats. The exercise routine narrative demonstrates how physical health efforts can spiral into psychological terror. These stories rely on the juxtaposition of the banal and the bizarre to unsettle the reader. The collection does not offer a continuous plot but rather a series of isolated incidents where normalcy breaks down. Readers looking for traditional monster tales may need to adjust their expectations, as the horror here emerges from familiar objects and routines.

📝 Description: Just After Sunset: Stories (Bound for Schools & Libraries)

This Turtleback edition contains twenty-six short stories designed for institutional use in schools and libraries. The narratives draw upon American gothic and supernatural traditions to explore the uncanny within mundane settings. One tale transforms a portable toilet into a slimy birth canal, while another reimagines a roadside honky-tonk as a site for endless love. A book salesman with a grievance picks up a mute hitchhiker who listens altogether too well. Another protagonist begins an exercise routine on a stationary bicycle to reduce bad cholesterol, only to find the activity takes him on a terrifying journey. The collection appeals to readers who enjoy King’s ability to twist ordinary objects and routines into sources of dread. It suits libraries and schools seeking accessible horror fiction that relies on psychological unease rather than gore. Those preferring high fantasy or historical epics may find the contemporary, grounded nature of these tales less engaging. The stories are organized as a sequence of independent vignettes, each focusing on a specific character confronting an inexplicable horror in their daily life.

Horror desk
This volume effectively demonstrates King’s skill in generating fear through everyday American settings, utilizing focal points like portable toilets and silent hitchhikers to create unease. However, it is crucial to note that readers seeking traditional monster tales, high fantasy elements, or historical epics will likely find the contemporary, grounded nature of these stories less engaging. The horror emerges from familiar routines rather than external threats, which may disappoint those expecting gore or complex world-building. While excellent for exploring psychological terror through mundane intrusion, this collection demands an adjustment in expectations regarding genre conventions and narrative structure.

Got it as a gift for a friend who loves the genre. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. Gorier than the description lets on, if that matters to you. Good, with the caveats above.

Arrived quickly and well packaged. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. A keeper.

📜 Historical context

Stephen King’s Just After Sunset stands firmly within the lineage of American horror, bridging the gap between classic Gothic sensibilities and modern suburban anxiety. By grounding supernatural phenomena in everyday locales—like roadside diners or home gyms—King continues a tradition established by predecessors who feared not just ghosts, but the corruption of the familiar. This volume reinforces his reputation for finding terror in the routine, reminding us that the uncanny often hides in plain sight within our daily lives.
