Julia
✍️ Peter StraubA woman in London faces a haunting past when a mysterious child appears.
Julia Lofting seeks refuge in London, hoping to leave behind the tragedy of her daughter's death and a failed marriage. Her attempt at a new life is interrupted by the arrival of a blonde child who brings an aura of evil. This encounter forces Julia to confront the reality she fled, revealing that her past is not dead but gathering strength. The narrative focuses on her psychological unraveling as she realizes the circle of the damned is closing in. Straub uses this premise to explore themes of guilt, memory, and the supernatural intrusion into domestic life. The story does not offer easy answers or escape routes for its protagonist.
Published by Vintage in 2014, this edition continues the legacy of gothic fiction. The story is set in London, a city often associated with dark literary traditions. Straub's work fits within the broader context of American supernatural fiction that explores European settings.

Wanted something for October and it delivered. The dread is in the pacing, not in gore, which is exactly how I like it. Well worth it.
Added this to the shelf next to the ones I reread. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks. Definitely recommend.
Was skeptical at first. It is the kind of horror that rewards reading with the lights on. The audiobook crowd will want the paper copy for the margins. Delivery took a bit longer than quoted. Still worth having on the shelf.
