I read a lot of horror and I'm picky. The setting is practically a character, and a hostile one. There's real craft in how much is left unsaid. Will be gifting a copy to a friend.
This has been on my wishlist for months. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. A couple of the side characters are thinly drawn.
Needed a good scare and got one. Read it in two sittings; the second one ran past midnight. The ending is bleak and honest, not a twist for the sake of one.
Wanted something for October and it delivered. The audiobook crowd will want the paper copy for the margins. There's real craft in how much is left unsaid. A couple of the side characters are thinly drawn. Good, with the caveats above.
Took a chance on it after reading the description here. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. Slow burn, but the burn is the point. Great value for what you get.
Finished it over a stormy weekend, which helped. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. The prose is clean and the scares land because the characters feel real. Great value for what you get.
❓ Frequently asked questions
📖 Who should read this
Fans of gothic tragedy and complex psychological horror will adore this perspective. It is ideal for those who enjoy morally ambiguous characters trapped in eternal youth. However, readers seeking straightforward action or traditional adult-centered vampire tales may find the focus on a child’s body too unsettling or niche.
