Hemlock & Silver
✍️ T. KingfisherA healer uses poison and science to save a princess in a dark Snow White retelling.
The narrative centers on Anja, a practitioner who drinks toxins to heal others. She answers a royal summons to treat Princess Snow, whose illness defies conventional remedies. Accompanied by a silent guard and an arrogant feline companion, Anja investigates the cause of the sickness. Her efforts lead her to a concealed dimension accessible through a magical mirror. This hidden space appears crucial to understanding the disease. The story examines the intersection of herbalism, royal duty, and supernatural danger. It questions the cost of using dangerous methods for noble ends.
This work sits within the tradition of dark fairy tale reimaginings popular in contemporary speculative fiction. It draws on Gothic tropes of hidden realms and treasonous intrigue, updated with a focus on scientific inquiry and herbalist practices rather than medieval mysticism.

This has been on my wishlist for months. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly. Happy enough with the purchase.
Was skeptical at first. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. Solid, if not essential.
Been meaning to get this one for a while. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. Delivery took a bit longer than quoted. Recommended with reservations.
Added this to the shelf next to the ones I reread. Slow burn, but the burn is the point. My only regret is not ordering it sooner.
A friend from my book club recommended it. Not a jump-scare book; it gets under the skin and stays there. Read it in two sittings; the second one ran past midnight. It assumes some familiarity with the genre's tropes. Happy enough with the purchase.
