⭐ Reader reviews
Reader rating
This novel successfully merges the comfort of small-town life with high-stakes eldritch horror, creating a distinctive tonal balance. Tanya Huff excels at character development, using the confined setting to explore loyalty and isolation effectively. The queer romance between the baker and the investigator adds necessary emotional weight to the supernatural conflict, preventing the cosmic elements from feeling detached. While readers expecting traditional hardboiled detective fiction or unrelenting horror may find the tone mismatched, fans of cozy supernatural mysteries will appreciate the accessible narrative. The book delivers on its promise of blending genre conventions with heartfelt connection, making it a standout for those who prefer character-driven plots over graphic intensity.
