While it successfully places a pre-1923 document back into circulation, it fails as a reading experience due to its admitted scanning flaws and lack of editorial context. It does not suit readers seeking Mary Shelley’s gothic masterpieces or any form of modern culinary instruction. The presence of missing pages and visual defects makes it unsuitable for casual browsing or aesthetic appreciation. However, for the specific niche of academic researchers tracking publishing trends or collectors of Nabu Press reprints, it holds undeniable value as a primary source artifact. It is a functional object, not a literary delight.

📖 Why choose it

📖

Why this book is worth reading

This book is strictly for the collector of bibliographic curiosities and the historian of print culture who values the integrity of archival survival over narrative engagement. It offers no culinary guidance, nor does it provide a curated experience of Mary Shelley’s known fiction. Instead, it serves as a direct, unedited window into a specific moment of publishing history. Readers seeking a pristine aesthetic will find this edition lacking, but those interested in the mechanics of digital reproduction and the preservation of pre-1923 materials will appreciate its existence. It is a tool for researchers or enthusiasts who understand that imperfections like blurred pages are inherent to the process of saving texts from time. It appeals to those who view books as historical objects first and literary vehicles second, offering a raw connection to the past without modern commentary or correction.

Slow start

Wanted something for October and it delivered. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly. My only quibble is that the middle third sags a little. Happy enough with the purchase.

Good addition to the shelf

Took a chance on it after reading the description here. It is the kind of horror that rewards reading with the lights on. Slow burn, but the burn is the point. Gorier than the description lets on, if that matters to you. Solid, if not essential.
