📜 Historical context
This novella captures the raw, unfiltered brutality characteristic of King’s early work, echoing the grim realism of 1970s splatterpunk and folk horror traditions. It strips away supernatural exposition to focus on human vulnerability against malicious forces. By grounding the terror in mundane settings like a gravel pit, it aligns with the genre’s exploration of everyday spaces turning into nightmarish traps, emphasizing sudden, senseless evil over mythical lore.
