Bonfire Night
A novella exploring hidden family secrets during the Halloween season.
Shepherd examines how urban legends evolve from old folk tales within a specific community. The plot centers on Jamie, whose family life becomes entangled with these deep-rooted myths. As the calendar moves from Halloween toward Guy Fawkes Night, the boundaries between reality and legend blur. The narrative does not rely on jump scares but rather on the weight of history. It asks what happens when a town's dirty secret is forced into the light. The story treats the seasonal setting as a character in itself, influencing the behavior of the characters. This approach creates a sense of inevitability that drives the plot forward without needing excessive violence.
The narrative is set between Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night, two significant dates in British culture. This period marks a transition from autumn festivities to winter traditions. The story uses this specific timeframe to heighten the sense of isolation and impending doom for the characters.
