A Shadow in the Dark

Kenneth Keairnes presents a narrative set in Hopkins, Nebraska, where two boys vanished on Halloween fifty years prior. The story follows teenager Johnny Schmidt as he deals with his father’s death and the subsequent disappearance of his best friends. As the town collapses into chaos, Johnny investigates secrets kept by his grandmother and a stranger named Adolphus Cesare. These figures are not human but entities from another world who have waited decades for their moment. The plot accelerates when Johnny learns that a plague is approaching to eliminate ninety-nine point nine percent of humanity, with Earth as its primary target. He has only days to prevent this extinction event while confronting dark truths about his own lineage. Keairnes structures the tale around these revelations, blending small-town mystery with cosmic horror. The book appeals to readers who enjoy supernatural fiction involving hidden histories and impending doom. It may not suit those seeking lighthearted adventures or purely historical accounts. Keairnes qualifies as both author and publisher for this 2026 release. The narrative relies on the tension between personal grief and global catastrophe, using the backdrop of a Nebraska town to explore themes of isolation and survival.
