This concept evolved from religious exorcism tales and nineteenth-century spiritualist literature, moving from theological warnings to psychological horror. You recognize it when a character’s demeanor shifts abruptly, often marked by distorted voices, unnatural strength, or knowledge they could not possibly possess. The critical difference lies in the source of the threat. In possession narratives, the evil is external and tangible; it enters from the outside.
