A revenge plot on a train turns deadly when secrets surface.
Anna Matheson orchestrates a reunion with six people who ruined her family during the war. She traps them on a train bound for Chicago to demand justice. Her plan relies on secrecy and control over the situation. However, a murder before dawn disrupts her carefully laid scheme. The victim’s death suggests that other passengers have their own agendas. Sager explores how vengeance can consume those who seek it. The narrative focuses on the psychological unraveling of each character. Trust erodes quickly as accusations fly in the confined space. The author uses the train’s journey to mirror the characters’ descent into chaos. This approach creates a sense of inevitability and dread. Readers experience the tension through Anna’s perspective as she realizes her plan has failed. The story highlights the cost of holding onto past grievances.
The novel draws on mid-twentieth century American travel and the lingering trauma of World War II. It uses the luxury train tradition to create a isolated environment for conflict. The setting reflects post-war anxieties about justice and hidden histories.

📖 Why choose it
Why this book is worth reading
Readers who appreciate intricate psychological puzzles and slow-burn suspense will find this book deeply rewarding. The confined setting of the overnight train forces a claustrophobic atmosphere, perfect for those who enjoy dissecting complex character dynamics and hidden agendas. Sager’s focus on how vengeance consumes its seeker offers a poignant exploration of grief and moral ambiguity. Those who value detailed plotting and atmospheric dread over fast-paced action will engage with the tension as secrets surface. The narrative demands patience but rewards attentive readers with a satisfying unraveling of lies, making it ideal for fans of psychological horror who like to question every character's trustworthiness.

Not my usual subgenre but wanted to branch out. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly. Slow burn, but the burn is the point. It assumes some familiarity with the genre's tropes. Still worth having on the shelf.
Was skeptical at first. Not a jump-scare book; it gets under the skin and stays there. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. Would buy from this store again.
Arrived quickly and well packaged. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. My only regret is not ordering it sooner.
Finished it over a stormy weekend, which helped. There's real craft in how much is left unsaid. Highly recommend.
I read a lot of horror and I'm picky. Not a jump-scare book; it gets under the skin and stays there. The cover feels thinner than expected.
Took a chance on it after reading the description here. Read it in two sittings; the second one ran past midnight. Gorier than the description lets on, if that matters to you. Happy enough with the purchase.
Been meaning to get this one for a while. The prose is clean and the scares land because the characters feel real. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks. If you like this kind of cooking, don't hesitate.

Seekers of atmospheric, character-driven thrillers set against historical backdrops will adore this claustrophobic journey. If you prefer lighthearted comedies or pure adrenaline-fueled action devoid of emotional depth and psychological complexity, this intense narrative may leave you cold.
