Voices in the Snow
✍️ Darcy CoatesA woman trapped in a gothic house during a storm realizes her crash was no accident.
Clare’s experience begins with fragmented memories of dark shapes in the snow and unexplained terror. Upon waking, she finds herself in an unfamiliar gothic residence under the care of a stranger. The isolation is enforced by a vicious blizzard that blankets the world in white. Clare must decide if her savior is trustworthy or if the danger lies within his walls. The narrative focuses on her growing paranoia as she hears and sees things in the woods. Coates uses the storm to heighten the sense of being hunted. The plot hinges on the uncertainty of whether the threat is human or something unfeeling. This approach creates a sustained atmosphere of dread without relying on jump scares.
Published by Poisoned Pen Press in 2020, this work fits into the contemporary horror genre. It draws on the long tradition of gothic fiction featuring isolated mansions and supernatural threats. The setting evokes classic winter isolation tales where characters face unknown dangers alone.

📖 Why choose it
Why this book is worth reading
Readers who appreciate sustained atmospheres of dread and psychological tension will find this book compelling. The narrative effectively uses a vicious blizzard to heighten the sense of being hunted, creating a claustrophobic thriller experience without relying on cheap jump scares. Those interested in unreliable narrators and the uncertainty of whether a threat is human or monstrous will enjoy the slow-burn approach. It is ideal for fans of dark fantasy and gothic fiction who value mood and paranoia over fast-paced action or definitive answers.

Grabbed it for a long flight. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. Shipping was quick too.
Took a chance on it after reading the description here. Not a jump-scare book; it gets under the skin and stays there. Gorier than the description lets on, if that matters to you.
A friend from my book club recommended it. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks. The ending is bleak and honest, not a twist for the sake of one. Would buy from this store again.
Finally got around to ordering this. The prose is clean and the scares land because the characters feel real. Already eyeing my next order.
