The Room Remembers

It's 10:45 p.m. when Ananya leaves the office. The rain doesn't care that the last bus is gone, or that her phone is down to six per cent. When a black SUV slows beside her and the ID card on the dashboard matches her own office tower, she gets in. By midnight, the road has surrendered to fog. The only place still lit on the hillside is a forgotten resthouse called the Hillview, where a tired receptionist slides two brass keys across the counter without quite meeting their eyes - Room 7 for her, Room 8 for him. Room 7 has a diary no one alive admits to writing. Room 8 has a stain on the floor that shouldn't still be wet. The mirror between them shows, for half a second, a third person standing where no one stands. And deep in corridors sealed long before either of them was born, something that has been waiting thirty years begins, very quietly, to listen back. Two strangers. One storm. A building that has not forgotten a single guest it lost. The room remembers. It does not forgive.
