The purloined letter/La lettre volee: Bilingual edition/Edition bilingue
✍️ Edgar Allan PoeA bilingual reprint of Poe's 1845 detective story featuring C. Auguste Dupin.
Edgar Allan Poe’s third tale featuring C. Auguste Dupin offers a glimpse into the early development of the detective genre. This 2016 publication by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform provides both English and French texts on 66 pages. The story involves a stolen letter, a subject tied to monograms and often categorized under children's fiction in library systems. Dupin’s methodical approach distinguishes this work from Poe’s other tales like "The Murders in the Rue Morgue." The narrative structure relies on logical analysis rather than supernatural intervention. This edition is valuable for students of literature or fans of classic mystery who appreciate the historical context of Poe’s work. It does not contain illustrations or additional commentary, focusing solely on the text itself.
Poe introduced this story in The Gift for 1845, published in 1844. It quickly appeared in various journals and newspapers. This work stands as a key precursor to modern detective fiction, establishing the template for future mystery writers through the character of Dupin.

Added this to the shelf next to the ones I reread. The dread is in the pacing, not in gore, which is exactly how I like it. Solid, if not essential.
A friend from my book club recommended it. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. The prose is clean and the scares land because the characters feel real. Glad I finally picked this up.
Needed a good scare and got one. The binding held up to being carried around for a week. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. It assumes some familiarity with the genre's tropes. Happy enough with the purchase.
This has been on my wishlist for months. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. The font runs small in this edition. Recommended with reservations.
