Finally got around to ordering this. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly. Great value for what you get.
Ordered it for Halloween and it came in time. Not a jump-scare book; it gets under the skin and stays there. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. A keeper.
Added this to the shelf next to the ones I reread. Print is comfortable for late-night reading. The setting is practically a character, and a hostile one. Well worth it.
Not my usual subgenre but wanted to branch out. It is the kind of horror that rewards reading with the lights on. The cover feels thinner than expected. Good, with the caveats above.
Not my usual subgenre but wanted to branch out. Read it in two sittings; the second one ran past midnight. The audiobook crowd will want the paper copy for the margins. The cover feels thinner than expected. Still worth having on the shelf.
Added this to the shelf next to the ones I reread. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. Read it in two sittings; the second one ran past midnight. Well worth it.
❓ Frequently asked questions
📖 Who should read this
Readers fascinated by the genealogy of speculative fiction will delight in this collection, which traces the genre’s evolution through seminal early works. However, those craving high-octane modern thrills or rigorous scientific exposition should look elsewhere, as the narrative pace here is deliberately measured and atmospheric rather than action-driven.
