I read a lot of horror and I'm picky. The dread is in the pacing, not in gore, which is exactly how I like it. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly.
Arrived quickly and well packaged. Read it in two sittings; the second one ran past midnight. My only quibble is that the middle third sags a little. Happy enough with the purchase.
Ordered it for Halloween and it came in time. Read it in two sittings; the second one ran past midnight. The prose is clean and the scares land because the characters feel real. Gorier than the description lets on, if that matters to you. Still worth having on the shelf.
Took a chance on it after reading the description here. Not a jump-scare book; it gets under the skin and stays there. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. Glad I finally picked this up.
Grabbed it for a long flight. The binding held up to being carried around for a week. The ending is bleak and honest, not a twist for the sake of one. My only quibble is that the middle third sags a little. Good, with the caveats above.
I read a lot of horror and I'm picky. The monster is scarier for how little you see of it. There's real craft in how much is left unsaid. A keeper.
