The Haunting of Hill House: (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition)
✍️ Shirley JacksonA scholar and three seekers investigate a house that chooses its own victim.
The narrative centers on Dr. Montague’s quest for proof of the supernatural. He brings Theodora, Luke, and Eleanor to Hill House. Each character reacts differently to the gathering power of the building. Eleanor’s fragility makes her particularly vulnerable to the poltergeist activity. The house manipulates their perceptions until it claims one of them. Jackson uses this setup to explore isolation and mental instability. The text avoids traditional ghost story tropes by focusing on psychological erosion rather than jump scares.
First published in 1959 by Viking Press, this novel is a cornerstone of American gothic fiction. The Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition includes an introduction by Laura Miller. It sits within the tradition of supernatural tales that examine the human mind under extreme stress.

⭐ Reader reviews
Reader rating
A friend from my book club recommended it. Print is comfortable for late-night reading. Five stars from me.
Ordered it for Halloween and it came in time. The audiobook crowd will want the paper copy for the margins. The atmosphere builds slowly and then does not let go. Gorier than the description lets on, if that matters to you. Solid, if not essential.
Not my usual subgenre but wanted to branch out. The monster is scarier for how little you see of it. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. Belongs in any working kitchen.
Needed a good scare and got one. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly. Print is comfortable for late-night reading. The font runs small in this edition. Good, with the caveats above.
