The Diary of Mr. Poynter (Fantasy and Horror Classics)

M. R. James crafts a quiet, unsettling descent into obsession in The Diary of Mr. Poynter, following a quiet scholar whose fascination with an antique fabric design slowly pulls a genuine terror into his everyday life. Rather than relying on sudden shocks, James builds an atmosphere of creeping dread where mundane domestic routines become tainted by a singular, lingering wrongness. The horror here is subtle and psychological, rooted in the slow realization that an ordinary object can harbor ancient malevolence. It is a measured, intelligent piece of classic supernatural fiction that avoids grand spectacles in favor of lingering unease. This story suits readers who appreciate slow-burning dread, academic backdrops, and traditional ghost stories that linger long after the final page.
