It appeals to those who view horror through a literary-historical lens rather than seeking immediate visceral thrills. Casual readers looking for standard ghost stories may find the 'outre' tone abstract or dated. However, devotees of gothic and psychological horror will appreciate this as a primary source text, judging the work by its pioneering influence on the genre rather than expecting modern narrative pacing or explicit content.
