📝 Description: Shudders
Fifteen stories of 'new horror' (for 1929) by authors of crime and the supernatural including E. F. Benson, Walter de la Mare, Hugh Walpole, Arthur Machen, Algernon Blackwood, Mrs. Belloc Lowndes, and M. R. James. This collection was 'designed' by Lady Cynthia Asquith (1887-1960)."Good horror tales are far rarer than good detective stories. In fact, the writing of them constitutes an art in itself. And the collection presented here by [Lady Cynthia] Asquith is not only representative of modern work in this field, but includes tales that rank among the best, up on the same shelf with the eerie pieces of Poe." (1929 review)

Consequently, potential buyers must judge the book by its impressive roster of contributors rather than explicit content details. It is not suitable for readers seeking graphic violence or modern gore; instead, it caters to connoisseurs of atmospheric, psychological, and gothic dread. Those expecting detailed summaries will find the editorial material thin, yet the pedigree of authors like Machen and James justifies its place on any serious horror fiction shelf.
