A minister and a boy forge a dangerous pact through electricity that spans decades.
This novel examines the long-term consequences of a childhood friendship rooted in scientific curiosity. Jamie Morton grows from a curious child into an addicted rock star, while Charles Jacobs evolves from a local minister into a theatrical performer using lightning for visual effects. Their reconnection forces them to confront the true nature of their agreement. The story investigates how early influences shape adult behavior and how desperation can lead to supernatural bargains. King uses the backdrop of American small-town life and the music industry to ground these fantastical elements in reality.
The story is set in a small New England town during the early sixties. It moves forward decades to depict the nomadic lifestyle of bar-band rock musicians. The setting contrasts traditional religious authority with the rebellious energy of mid-century music culture.

📖 Why choose it
Why this book is worth reading
This book is ideal for those who appreciate complex, character-driven horror that delves into the long-term consequences of childhood decisions. Readers drawn to psychological depth will find value in exploring how obsession corrupts innocent beginnings. It suits fans of flawed characters navigating supernatural bargains and the decay of bonds over decades. The narrative offers a compelling look at addiction, scientific curiosity, and the intersection of faith and electricity. Those who enjoy King’s earlier work and appreciate long-form storytelling about human desperation will find this engaging. It provides a heavy, introspective tone rather than lighthearted entertainment.

Been meaning to get this one for a while. The atmosphere builds slowly and then does not let go. Shipping was quick too.
First order from this shop. Read it in two sittings; the second one ran past midnight. The setting is practically a character, and a hostile one. A couple of the side characters are thinly drawn. Recommended with reservations.
Grabbed it for a long flight. The atmosphere builds slowly and then does not let go. Five stars from me.
Ordered it for Halloween and it came in time. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. My only regret is not ordering it sooner.
A friend from my book club recommended it. Not a jump-scare book; it gets under the skin and stays there. Great value for what you get.
Added this to the shelf next to the ones I reread. The setting is practically a character, and a hostile one. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. My only quibble is that the middle third sags a little.
