Forgotten Ones: Drabbles of Myth and Legend

Michelle River demonstrates remarkable discipline in her use of the drabble format, transforming ancient lore into sharp, immediate encounters with the unknown. The constraint of one hundred words per entry strips away unnecessary exposition, leaving only the essential bones of myth and legend to haunt the reader's imagination. This approach suits fans of atmospheric horror who prefer implication over explanation, allowing the terror to linger in the spaces between lines. While some may find the brevity restrictive, it effectively creates a mosaic of dread that feels both ancient and urgently present. The book succeeds in making gods and monsters feel newly terrifying by focusing on their elemental nature rather than their histories, offering a refreshing change from traditional narrative structures.
