While Edgar Allan Poe is credited, the content comprises essays and reviews from Burton's Gentleman's Magazine. It does not suit readers seeking contemporary thrillers or standalone Gothic fiction. The value lies in its preservation of original formats and library notations from 1839. Scholars of periodicals will appreciate the inclusion of Hazlitt and Carlyle. However, general horror fans might find the dense literary criticism and historical accounts less engaging than Poe’s known narratives. It is a niche item for those specifically studying Victorian publishing or Poe’s early professional environment.

Genuinely scary

Was skeptical at first. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. Would buy from this store again.

Grabbed it for a long flight. Print is comfortable for late-night reading. Shipping was quick too.

Was skeptical at first. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. The dread is in the pacing, not in gore, which is exactly how I like it. Glad I finally picked this up.
