Smith attempts to bridge the gap between children’s fantasy and adult horror by exploring the genesis of Wonderland’s most terrifying elements. The book succeeds in posing intriguing questions about fate and choice, specifically regarding Alice’s selection and the Red Queen’s rise. While the premise is bold, it relies heavily on atmospheric speculation rather than concrete plot resolution, which may leave some readers wanting more narrative closure. However, for enthusiasts of gothic prequels and psychological horror, this work offers a intriguing, if somewhat abstract, look at the shadows behind the rabbit hole. It suits those who prefer mood and mystery over traditional storytelling arcs.
