Auguste Dupin Stories
✍️ Edgar Allan PoeEdgar Allan Poe’s foundational detective stories featuring Auguste Dupin.
This collection brings together three pivotal tales by Edgar Allan Poe, establishing the blueprint for modern mystery fiction. The volume opens with The Murders in the Rue Morgue, a narrative widely recognized as the first story of its kind. It is followed by The Mystery of Marie Roget and concludes with The Purloined Letter. These works introduce Auguste Dupin, an amateur investigator whose methods rely on what Poe called ratiocination. This approach blends sharp intellect with creative imagination, allowing Dupin to inhabit the mindset of criminals he pursues. Dupin operates outside professional law enforcement, and his reasons for solving these cases shift across the narratives. His analytical prowess is so acute that he seems to anticipate the thoughts of his unnamed companion, the narrator who witnesses each deduction. Poe developed this character before the term detective entered common usage. The stories lay the groundwork for future fictional sleuths, including Sherlock Holmes, and define many conventions still present in the genre today.
Poe created these stories in the mid-nineteenth century, specifically between 1841 and 1844. He established the character before the word detective was coined. This work predates later famous detectives and defines early genre conventions.

Ordered it for Halloween and it came in time. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. Not a jump-scare book; it gets under the skin and stays there. Glad I finally picked this up.
Grabbed it for a long flight. The ending is bleak and honest, not a twist for the sake of one. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. My only quibble is that the middle third sags a little. Happy enough with the purchase.
