Maire Kennedy has never felt comfortable in her own skin; she feels the tug of the past, of distant ancestors whose blood runs through her veins, drawing her from the the New World back to the Old. Ireland is her goal, and she has the DNA results to prove her worthy place in the land of her distant forebears. One of her aims is to explore a particular prehistoric cairn, glowering on the the hilltop above a remote village, since the DNA company she used has told her she has a match to a burial archaeologists found within...but when she arrives on the hilltop, it all begins to go wrong. Sheela is waiting. And that's when Maire finds that you really can't choose your family... A Short Folk Horror Story of 8200 words

Reedman effectively harnesses the unique anxieties of modern genealogy, twisting the desire for connection into a nightmare of entrapment. The setting of a remote Irish village provides an authentic backdrop for folk horror tropes, grounding the supernatural elements in a tangible, cold reality. The narrative succeeds by focusing on psychological disintegration rather than gore, making the horror feel intimate and personal. This collection is best suited for fans of atmospheric tales where the environment itself acts as the antagonist. It delivers a concentrated burst of unease, perfect for readers who appreciate concise storytelling that lingers long after the final word, emphasizing the terrifying weight of ancestral duty.
