📝 Description: We Sold Our Souls

This supernatural thriller follows former guitarist Kris Pulaski as she investigates sabotage by her ex-bandmate. Once the guitarist for the ninety s heavy metal group Dürt Würk, she now works as a night manager at a Best Western after lead singer Terry Hunt left to become the star Koffin. A violent incident disrupts her quiet life and leads her to suspect sabotage by her former bandmate. Kris travels across America to find her old bandmates and confront Terry. Her route takes her from the Pennsylvania rust belt through a celebrity rehab center and into a music festival from hell. The narrative functions as a power ballad about resilience against a paranoid, pill-popping conspiracy that threatens the nation's soul. Only Kris with her guitar can stop this decay. This novel suits readers who enjoy rock music lore and supernatural mysteries involving band dynamics. It may not appeal to those seeking traditional haunted house stories or non musical horror settings.

Horror Reads editorial team
Horror desk
This supernatural thriller effectively utilizes the backdrop of the music industry to create a sinister and engaging mystery. Grady Hendrix demonstrates his talent for weaving cultural critique into horror, making the narrative feel both timely and timeless. However, it may not appeal to readers seeking traditional haunted house stories or non-musical horror settings. The focus on band dynamics and specific locations like rehab centers might alienate those preferring atmospheric dread over plot-driven action. While the premise is strong for metal fans, the reliance on industry lore limits its broader accessibility. It remains a solid choice for those interested in the darker side of fame and artistic integrity.

Slow start

Been meaning to get this one for a while. The audiobook crowd will want the paper copy for the margins. Print is comfortable for late-night reading. Gorier than the description lets on, if that matters to you. Happy enough with the purchase.

Took a chance on it after reading the description here. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. Already eyeing my next order.

Very good

Ordered it for Halloween and it came in time. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. It assumes some familiarity with the genre's tropes. Recommended with reservations.

Been meaning to get this one for a while. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. The ending is bleak and honest, not a twist for the sake of one. Definitely recommend.

📜 Historical context

Grady Hendrix continues his tradition of marrying genre fiction with cultural critique, much like his acclaimed works Paperbacks from Hell and My Best Friend's Exorcism. This narrative fits squarely within the lineage of rock-horror hybrids that explore the dark side of fame and addiction. By framing the plot as a power ballad against a pill-popping conspiracy, Hendrix echoes classic tales where music serves as both salvation and damnation, reflecting horror's ongoing fascination with the corruption of artistic integrity.
