📝 Description: The Book of Wonder and the Last Book of Wonder - Books That Inspired Tolkien: With Original Illustrations (Revised,)
Professor JRR Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings, was aged twenty when the illustrated Book of Wonder first appeared. The short stories are Gothic in style, poetic, mysterious and dream-like - often nightmarish, horrific and almost hallucinatory. Literary critics believe that Tolkien was inspired by Dunsany's work.

This collection is strictly for those who appreciate atmospheric density over plot-driven action. Fans of straightforward adventure will likely find the dream-like, almost hallucinatory tone frustratingly opaque. It suits readers who enjoy poetic prose and Gothic mystery above all else. Those seeking clear resolutions or traditional horror tropes may feel lost in its vague, nightmarish landscapes. However, for scholars of Tolkien’s influences and lovers of dark fantasy’s foundational texts, it remains a significant, if elusive, treasure that rewards patient, imaginative reading.
