Shining

Stephen King’s third published novel established his reputation as a leading voice in horror fiction. The narrative follows Jack Torrance, a writer battling alcoholism who takes a job as the winter caretaker for the Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies. He brings his wife and young son Danny to this remote location. Danny possesses psychic abilities known as the shining, which allow him to perceive the hotel’s dark history. A severe winter storm isolates the family from the outside world. The supernatural entities within the building begin to erode Jack’s mental stability. This shift places his wife and son in grave peril. King drew inspiration for the setting from a visit to the Stanley Hotel in 1974 and his personal struggles with addiction. The story explores themes of demonology, precognition, and the psychological unraveling of its protagonist. It stands as a foundational work in the genre, later followed by the sequel Doctor Sleep in 2013.
