Fungi from Yuggoth: An Annotated Edition
✍️ H. P. LovecraftAn annotated collection of Lovecraft's thirty-six sonnets with scholarly commentary.
H. P. Lovecraft composed his cycle of thirty-six sonnets in late December 1929 and early January 1930. This Hippocampus Press edition presents the text alongside extensive annotations by David E. Schultz, who examines the work's origins and its relationship to Donald Wandrei’s Sonnets of the Midnight Hours. The volume explores how these poems reflect Lovecraft’s evolving views on poetic expression and his broader fictional themes of cosmic alienation and hidden worlds. Schultz provides detailed notes for every poem, tracing their complex publication history as both individual pieces and a unified whole. Readers will find Jason C. Eckhardt’s full-page illustrations accompanying each sonnet, along with the author’s handwritten manuscript showing his revision process. The book also includes Harold S. Farnese’s sheet music for two of the sonnets, much of which has not been published before. This volume suits scholars and serious fans interested in the textual history of Lovecraft’s poetry. It offers concrete evidence of his creative process through manuscripts and musical scores. Casual readers seeking straightforward narrative horror may find the dense annotations less engaging than the poems themselves.
This 2022 publication by Hippocampus Press situates Lovecraft’s 1930 sonnets within the tradition of weird fiction. It connects the poetry to his letters with contemporaries like Robert E. Howard and Clark Ashton Smith, highlighting the interconnected nature of early twentieth-century American horror literature.

This has been on my wishlist for months. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. Five stars from me.
Ordered it for Halloween and it came in time. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks. Shipping was quick too.
Finally got around to ordering this. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. Would buy from this store again.
Grabbed it for a long flight. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with.
Arrived quickly and well packaged. The audiobook crowd will want the paper copy for the margins. The binding held up to being carried around for a week. The font runs small in this edition. Good, with the caveats above.
